Governance and CSR Management

Our Approach to CSR

The Hitachi Chemical Group's CSR

The Hitachi Chemical Group's definition of CSR goes beyond a compliance standpoint of “adherence to laws and regulations” and “actions in accordance with corporate ethics and the ethical values and conscience of each individual,” it also entails a value creation standpoint of “contributing to society through the development of superior technologies and products”, and “contributing to local and international communities” (see the chart below).

In other words, the true definition of our CSR is represented by the daily corporate activities that take us one step closer to realizing the corporate vision of the Hitachi Chemical Group. It is a manifestation of our principle of contributing to society through the development of superior technologies and products that chart new territories. While boldly creating “new value” whose benefits go beyond the boundary of chemistry, our foremost mission is to create “wonders” that exceed the expectations of society and our customers. This allows us to meet the needs of our customers and society and preserve and build trust from various stakeholders.

Our Concept of CSR

UN Global Compact

We conduct our business activities based on the principle of “consideration for others” and respect the rights of all stakeholders in everything we do. This includes among others ensuring product safety, information disclosure, environmental preservation and employment/appointment. We believe that new values are created from understanding the ideas and values of other countries and regions and from respecting each other. We believe that by positioning the idea of “respect for human rights” at the core of our management, it is possible to truly cooperate with employees working in other countries, regions and business areas, and with those, who support their activities.

Hitachi, Ltd. joined the UN Global Compact in February 2009 and declared to the international society its intention to make group-wide efforts to respect human rights on a higher level based on this principle.

As a member of the Hitachi Group, Hitachi Chemical also complies with this principle in its actions.

World Business Council for Sustainable Business (WBCSD)

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is an organization that aims to create a sustainable future for business, society, and the environment led by the CEOs of progressive corporations from over 30 countries around the world. Hitachi, Ltd. joined the organization in 1995, and, as a member of the Hitachi Group, Hitachi Chemical has also been part of the collaborative effort.

In 2008, Hitachi Chemical, as a core member of the Ecosystems Focus Area of WBCSD, published a Japanese version of The Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR), a report summarizing a systematic methodology for evaluating the correlation between the ecosystem and corporate activities.
